My Word Collector Book-Intermediate

Students can keep track of new words they have learned all year long with this booklet. They can add words daily based upon what you require. Possible words include sight words, word wall words, spelling words, subject words, and student names. This booklet becomes a spelling reference to use in writing and reading.

The Cover Page has places for student information. It will be more durable if laminated. There is a Title Page that again has student information including the purpose of the book. Each letter of the Alphabet has one sheet with lines on both sides. Each Alphabet Page has space for up to 54 words. Each page is numbered. The letter reference at the top of each first page shows the letter in both manuscript and cursive. This may help to meet the needs of you and your students better.

Finally, there is a Back Cover Page with a copy of the Cursive Alphabet to be used as a reference for writing. This page should also be laminated for durability.

You can bind these booklets in many ways. If your school has a binding machine, that works best. If not, you can bind using string. This is an important reference tool for students to use anytime they are writing. These booklets can be found in either of my stores:

Monthly Intermediate Research Fact Sheets

Students love nonfiction books! So, why not give them a routine way to research facts? In fact, why not do one practice per month?

Intermediate Grade teachers, using a leveled book, would need to model the process of looking, finding, and selecting. Then, they would need to model how to say the fact if they told a friend in their own words. When you think they are ready to give it a try, use a document camera--or overhead with copy--to allow a whole class practice. Give students a copy of fact sheet to use for whole class practice. They need this kind of modeling and practice in review before attempting it on their own.

Students can then be given leveled books to look at pictures, read the text, and decide what facts they decide are really cool, or they did not know, or they want to share with others. Give them post-it notes to use to stick to the book facts they want to use in their research. Once they have the three facts they want to use, they are ready to put it on paper.  As an added skill, have students write the page number where the fact was located.

After completing the fact sheet, give students a copy of the Illustration and Caption Sheet. On this part of the
activity students can not only illustrate their facts, but also write sentences explaining what they drew.

You might break the project into 1-2 days modeling; 1-2 days looking, reading, and selecting; and 1-2 days illustrating. In the end, what a great hallway display! You can also have Literacy/Writing Circles where you group 4 students who have read different books. They can share with each other their facts and illustrations. Over the course of a year, you will be able to see growth in reading, writing, and presentation.

Back to School Read Aloud Activity Packets

Read Alouds are a great way to share literature with the students in your class. They love to hear you read! I always like to use my document camera to project the books as I read. That way the illustrations are big enough to see, and so colorful. After the books are read, they can also be put in a center so students can reread the story as they do any part of the activity packet.

I have created activity packets for ten back to school titles. These packets are available in both primary and intermediate versions. Each packet includes the following materials: Teacher Story Chart (summary), Vocabulary Word Wall cards, Word Study activity for vocabulary, "Story Bits"-comprehension questions with an illustration, Written Response to Reading with illustrations, Character Sketch, Comic Strip retelling of the story, and a Word Search using vocabulary and character names. Any part of the packet would make a great display of student work. Students can also be placed in small literacy groups to discuss the story and their work with each other. The available titles are on the 2 posters.

These products are available at both my TPT and  TN stores.
